Buying Designer Clothing from TheRealReal on theCheapCheap

Today I’m going to share with you how I buy designer clothes at deep discount prices. I am disclosing my strategies with you as part of my “radical transparency” policy for my store www.fab50fashions.com. This is just one of the places I buy from. I’ll talk about more places in future postings:)

One of my favorite places to find great bargains on designer fashion is TheRealReal. Let me show you some of the bargains I have found that I have for sale in my shop fab50fashions. (Yes, I would like you to have a look!) Here is the authenticity policy for TheRealReal:

THE REALREAL POLICY ON AUTHENTICITY
Authenticity is the cornerstone of The RealReal. We staff trained, in-house professionals including gemologists, horologists, art appraisers and apparel experts who work to ensure that every item sold is 100% authentic and in beautiful condition.

MULTI-POINT INSPECTION AND EVALUATION
All items are put through a multi-point, brand-specific authentication process by a trained team of luxury experts headed by our Senior Director of Authentication & Brand Compliance before they are accepted for consignment. We inspect all goods for appropriate brand markings, date codes, serial tags and hologram stickers. Everything passes through our strict authenticity tests before it is curated into daily sales. Our fine jewelry and watches are authenticated and appraised by our gemologists and horologists and each piece comes with a valuation certificate. Art items are thoroughly researched and validated by our team of fine art specialists.

The RealReal’s authentication process is unique to The RealReal and independent of any brands. Brands identified are not involved in the authentication of the products being sold, and none of the brands sold assume any responsibility for any products purchased from or through the website. Brands sold on The RealReal are not partnered or affiliated with The RealReal in any manner. However, The RealReal fully cooperates with brands and state and federal agencies seeking to track down the source of counterfeit items, which includes revealing the contact information of consignors submitting counterfeit goods.

I have purchased several items from them and I love it! All items are carefully packaged in garment bags and come with a little information packet about the company and how you can consign with them, and a card of authenticity. Here are some of the items I have purchased for the purpose of resale in my shop.

#1.  Vera Wang Tulle-Accented Silk Dress (tags are still on it). I bought it for $87.50. The tag is from Saks Fifth Avenue and shows the retail price as $990.00. It has probably been tried on multiple times (by me also) but who cares! It is in pristine condition and you can always have it dry cleaned for that price! Shop Vera Wang

Here is my friend Vicki modeling it for my shop – isn’t she gorgeous?!?

#2. Helmut Lang Abstract Print Sleeveless Top (tags are still on it). I bought it for $32.50. The tag is from Shop Sixty Five (no idea where that is) and it shows the retail price as $335.00.  The Helmut Lang tag at the back of the top was loose, so I stitched it up. No big deal! Other than that the condition is pristine and the fabric is wonderful. Shop Helmut Lang

When I sell them in my shop, I mark them up. This covers the time it takes me to find such great deals (hours and hours, honestly), the cost of my website and advertising, and any dry cleaning or minor repairs I might have to make.

But you could buy designer clothes from TheRealReal yourself. Here’s how:

Go to www.therealreal.com and create an account. New members get a $25 credit! There are several categories you can choose from. This is how I do it:

  1. I always choose SALE from the top menu.
  2. Then on the left hand side, (if you’re using a desktop/laptop) choose WOMEN as the category.
  3. Then choose whatever you’re looking for. I’m looking for CLOTHES.
  4. Then choose what category you want from there. I’m looking for DRESSES.
  5. Now you start filtering. Choose your sizes.
  6. Then check the box marked “Items with Tags.”
  7. Finally, sort by price. I always sort by “Low to High”.
  8. While creating this post I found this great buy for a dress by Diane Von Furstenberg.

Now the catch is that you can only keep something in your cart for 20 minutes. If you haven’t checked out by then, your item goes back out and up for grabs again. This can be frustrating if you’re like me and it takes you longer than that to look through everything. You have to make up your mind quickly, or someone else might grab it (at the very least you have to go back and add it to your cart again). This is where the filtering down to precisely what you’re looking for comes in handy.

Don’t have time to sit at your lap-top all day and race the 20 minute clock? I do! If you want deals but can’t spend the time looking for bargains, I can do it for you.

Head on over to my shop and enter your information. I’ll start shopping for you right away! Yes, I need a shopper!
